Housing has been one of the most important keys to the continued development and success of the region. In May 2012, the Bakken Housing Summit brought together stakeholders and service providers to connect and conduct business to address the housing needs. We called for the construction of 5,000 homes in 24 months.

Building 5000 Homes in 24 Months

There were over 1,800 housing units build in 2012 in Williston alone. Permit activity so far in 2013 looks to exceed 2012 levels. At the time we were scoffed at for using such a number. Now it appears the market is well on the way to meeting and exceeding that goal.

Exploring a Billion Dollar Construction Market

In 2012, the cities of Williston, Dickinson, and Minot had building permit valuations of roughly $440 million, $408 million, and $247 million respectively. Factor in Watford City, Stanley, and Tioga and the value of construction activity in western North Dakota was well over $1 billion.

But as we move forward, the Bakken region needs much more than housing. With over $1 billion in permit valuation, the volume of construction needs and opportunities is clear. There are great needs for commercial, industrial and other infrastructure to meet the needs of this growing market.

That is why the 2012 Bakken Housing Summit has morphed into the 2013 Bakken Construction Summit.
